Fast Facts: John Lee Love Known For: Inventor of the Love pencil sharpenerBorn: Sept. 26, 1889? in Fall River, MassachusettsDied: Dec. 26, 1931 Charlotte, North Carolina Early Life John Lee Love is believed to have been born on Sept. 26, 1889, though another account lists his birth year as sometime between 1865 and 1877 during Reconstruction, which would have put his place of birth in the South. Not much else is known about Loves early days, including whether he had any formal schooling or what prompted him to tinker with and improve certain everyday objects. We do know that he worked almost his entire life as a carpenter in Fall River, Massachusetts and that he patented his first invention, an improved plasterers hawk, on July 9, 1895 (U.S. Patent No. 542,419). First Invention The plasterers hawk traditionally had been a flat, square wooden board, about 9 inches long on each side, with a handle—basically, a post-like grip—that is perpendicular to the board and attached to its bottom. By putting the plaster, mortar, or, later, stucco on top of the board, the plasterer or mason could access it quickly and easily with the tool being used to apply it. The new design functioned much like an artists palette. As a carpenter, Love was likely well acquainted with the use of plaster and mortar. He believed that the hawks in use at the time were too bulky to be portable. His innovation was to design a hawk with a detachable handle and a foldable board made of aluminum, which must have been a lot easier to clean than wood. Portable Pencil Sharpener Another of Loves inventions, and one better known than the plasterers hawk, had a much wider impact. It was the simple, portable pencil sharpener, the predecessor of the small plastic device that has been used by schoolchildren, teachers, college students, engineers, accountants, and artists the world over. Prior to the invention of the pencil sharpener, a knife was the most common instrument used to sharpen pencils, which have been around in one form or another since Roman times (although pencils werent mass-produced in a form familiar to us until 1662 in  Nuremberg, Germany). But whittling a point on a pencil was a time-consuming process, and pencils were becoming more and more popular. The solution soon hit the market in the form of the worlds first mechanical pencil sharpener, invented by  Parisian mathematician Bernard Lassimone  on Oct. 20, 1828 (French patent number 2444). Loves reworking of Lassimones device seems intuitive now, but it was revolutionary at the time. Basically, the new model was portable and included a compartment to capture the shavings. The Massachusetts carpenter  applied for a patent for what he called his improved device  in 1897, and it was approved  on Nov. 23, 1897 (U.S. Patent No. 594,114). His design didnt look much like todays portable sharpeners, but it worked by a similar principle. The pencil was inserted into a conical sheath and was moved in a circle, causing the sheath and the blade inside it to rotate around the pencil, sharpening it. Instead of turning the pencil against the blade, as with todays portable sharpeners, the blade was turned against the pencil by the circular motion. Love wrote in his patent application that his sharpener could  also be designed in a more ornate fashion to be used as a desk ornament or paperweight. It eventually became known as the Love Sharpener, and his principle has been in continuous use since he introduced it. Legacy We dont know how many more inventions Love could have given the world. Love  died, along with nine other passengers, on Dec. 26, 1931,  when the car they were riding in collided with a train near Charlotte, North Carolina. The majority of work done by Anne Moody while working for these two organizations was voter registration drives. During Moody’s stay at college, she would often travel to the delta and stay in the Freedom House. Here, Moody and her colleagues would plan and execute the voter registration drives. Moody would also organize rallies. Unfortunately, these rallies were poorly attended, and not much was accomplished. Many Negroes were too afraid to vote and did not attend the rallies because of the threat of losing their jobs. The tactic of making Negroes aware of their civil rights in a nonviolent and passive manner failed from the beginning of Moody’s inception into the Movement. Moody’s â€Å"nonviolent† sit-in at the Woolworth’s lunch counter may be her most famous act not just during the Movement, but possibly her life. The idea behind the sit-in was to request service at the segregated lunch counter of Woolworth’s. As the sit-in progressed, the white population became more aware of what was happening, and they started heckling and threatening Moody and her fellow activists. Nonviolence turned to violence when a white man rushed Memphis, one of the sit-in members. He was beaten up and arrested. Moody was dragged out by her hair, and her friend was taken from her seat by force. A few days after the sit-in, a group of Negro ministers went to the mayor with demands. The mayor ignored them. The nonviolent sit-in was supposed to be a message to the community and the country. Unfortunately, the sit-in, in the eyes of Anne Moody, was a failure because it had accomplished nothing. The March on Washington should have been a high point for civil rights activists everywhere, but for Moody, it was another disappointment. She recalls, â€Å"Thousands of people just took off, leaving most of their leaders at the podium. It was kind of funny to watch the leaders run to overtake the march. The way some of them had been leading the people in the past, perhaps the people were better off leading themselves† (Moody, 334). Moody had begun to realize that passive strategies were not an effective and practical way to change laws. She had begun to realize that Negroes might have to meet violence with violence if they ever wanted their voices to be heard. During Martin Luther King’s speech, Moody thinks, â€Å"We had ‘dreamers’ instead of leaders leading us† (Moody, 335). Her uncertainty with the Movement had reached an all time high by this point. She believed that the leaders were out of touch with the black community, as seen by the emphasis on voter registration rather than the poverty in the rural south. On her way back to Mississippi, Moody wondered if she and the other 250,000 people at the march had made any impact on the government, a clear indication that her confidence was slowly decaying. Moody had begun working in Canton, Mississippi rallying the local black population and canvassing for voter registration. Every time it appeared that progress was made, there was a catastrophe. A church was bombed, people were beaten and killed, and black women were raped. The organizations in Mississippi decided to create a â€Å"Freedom Vote. † The Freedom Vote resulted in 80,000 blacks voting. Unfortunately, there were 400,000 blacks of voting age living in Mississippi. After the voting campaign, Moody was worn out and tired. She left the movement and made her way to New Orleans to stay with her grandmother and sister. After some time passed, she received her diploma from Tugaloo College and found herself back in Canton. She was persuaded to go to Washington and testify about the racism in Mississippi. On the bus, people were singing freedom songs in high spirits. A fellow activist named Gene turned to Moody and said, â€Å"We’re gonna git things straight in Washington, huh? † (Moody, 424). She thought to herself, â€Å"I wonder. I really wonder† (Moody, 424). His honorable ideals led him to be manipulated and ultimately turned out to be his fatal flaw. Caesar was a Roman general and statesman that was exceptionally bright and clever. His political talents are somewhat the reasons he became such a successful ruler but his arrogance ultimately caused his demise. Brutus’ and Caesars’ character is portrayed as very different. This is shown when the conspirators ask for Ceasar to allow Metellus Cimber for enfranchisement, he replies, â€Å"I am constant as the northern star,/ Of whose true-fix’d and resting quality/ There is no fellow in the firmament† (3.1.66-68). This quote demonstrates Caesars character in how he arrogant he is. He views himself as supreme leader and is furious they would even ask. His arrogance, for example, is s hown right before he and Decius head to the Senate, Decius explains how someone else will take the crown if he didnt go. While Caesar is still considering to stay home for Calpurnia, Decius adds that he would lose public regard if he was influenced so easily by a woman. Whereas Caesar was arrogant, yet cunning and generous, Brutus was known to be honorable. Even Marc Antony, a man who he betrayed, had said, â€Å"This was the noblest Roman of them all:/All the conspirators, save only he,/Did that they did in envy of great Caesar† ( citation)this signifies even though he wronged Antony, his character is still seen as honorable. Brutus’ honorability is shown when the conspiracy is formed. Brutus believes that all the men there are honorable so he decides not to take an oath. Overall, Caesar and Brutus were both respectable and admirable but Caesars arrogance damaged his credibility and in spite of the fact that Brutus was honorable, he was too trusting which led him to be manipulated into doing something he would regret. Both Caesar’s and Brutus’ personalities seem to influence their intentions regarding Rome. Caesar wants the power to rule Rome as he pleases, whereas Brutus wants to save Rome and for it to be safe and pros perous. For instance, Caesar is offered the crown three times before he faints on the stage. Not because he does not want the crown, but because he wants the rabblement to want him unconditionally. Before the conspiracy was formed and Cassius had not manipulated Brutus, Brutus was worried for the sake of Rome. Brutus was anxious that Caesar would rise to power and lose his humility and become what Cassius says he will. In his garden, Brutus construes himself, â€Å"Then lest he may, prevent/And, therefore, think him as a serpents egg/When hatched, would his kind grow mischievous† (2.1.26-34) this quote shows me how Brutus truly feels towards Caesar coming to power because there is no one for him to lie to but himself. After Cassius’ manipulation, Brutus truly feels as though he must kill Caesar to save Rome. Caesar, however; has no intentions on trying to save Rome. Caesar is an egotistic yet brave guy that fears nothing but losing power. When Calpurnia is worried about Caesar he tells her, â€Å"Cowards die many times before their deaths,/The valiant never taste of death but once.† (2.1.32-33) this signifies how brave he really is and does not waste precious hours of his life anticipating what could or could not happen. However, this also demonstrates how sure he is that he would not die which soon proves to be fatally wrong. At this point, Caesar and Brutus had dangerously af fected their futures. Caesars arrogance and Brutus’ means of achieving his goals end up being their fatal flaws. Caesar’s and Brutus’ intentions regarding Rome lead them to both of their deaths and both at the hands of Brutus. On March 15th, 44 B.C Julius Caesar was killed on the steps of the senate-house after the conspirators asked for the enfranchisement of Metellus Cimber, and being too arrogant to allow it. Seconds later, as he sees his death is at the hands of his friend he mutters, â€Å"et tu brute†, signifying, and you, Brutus? Ironically, two years later on October 23, Marcus Brutus kills himself after the defeat at the second battle of Philippi. While Brutus is talking with Strato, he says, â€Å" Caesar, now be still;/ I killed not thee with half so good a will† (5.5.50-51) this quote demonstrates how Brutus wants to kill himself more than he wanted to kill Caesar. Brutus final words assure that what he does now is twice as pure as what he did to Caesar, who is avenged by this act. Although at the time killing, Caesar seems like the only way to achieve hi s goal, he now sees he made a mistake. Caesar, however, was not afraid of death and was, perhaps, maybe a little too brave about it. This is shown when Caesar says, Of all the wonders that I have heard, It seems to me most strange that men should fear; Seeing death, a necessary end, Will come when it will come (Act II, Scene 2) This demonstrates Caesar†s true feeling towards death and his views on the necessary end. He believes only cowards would actually fear their own demise; he is not a coward. For instance, when Brutus kills Caesar, Caesar says â€Å"et tu brute† which signifies that although he is not scared he is completely confused about the betrayal of one of his closest friends. To summarize, Ceasar and Brutus both have a tragic ending at the hands of Brutus that was ultimately caused by arrogance and naivete. To conclude, Caesar and Brutus are two influential men in positions of power, whose tragic, fatal and disturbing endings are caused by their conflicting intentions and defective traits. Brutus is an honorable man that was manipulated by his brother-in-law due to his naivete. Brutus wanted the best for Rome but in the end would never see his ideas become reality. Caesar is a brave and generous man fighting for the common people. His intentions may have been flawed but he ultimately was an honorable man that did not deserve his tragic ending.
